Irises at Ota Jinja・カキツバタ

I first visited Ota Jinja’s field of a thousand rabbit-ear irises (kakitsubata) last year. I had gone late in the afternoon, so the field was in shadow and the lenses I had brought were not long enough to convey the beauty of the flowers. So this year I made sure to visit in the middle of a sunny day, with a telephoto lens. There are so many flowers so I focused on just one, keeping the others in view but out of focus.

The kakitsubata iris field at Ota Jinja has been blooming for a millennia, and is a Japanese National Treasure. A tanka poem was written about these irises in the Heian Era, 9th Century, and they also appear in The Tale of Genji.
